The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
